Panty raids, a form of 1950ish college or university hijinks, consists of large groups of men intruding on women's
dormitories with the plan to cause as much commotion as possible, steal some lingerie, and in general confound the faculty and the larger community in which

The term "panty raid" has crept into our linguistic consciousness despite the long time since one had occurred. And those strange and disturbing juvenile episodes showed some Woodstockization of nostalgia due to the moderating effects of time. Apparently, if people did it long enough ago, it becomes less culpable. Or so it seems.
Case in point: There's actually a dispute as to where the first panty raid occurred. Some say that the first one occurred at Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois on February 25, 1949; but others said the first one occurred at the University of Michigan on March 21, 1952. Apparently the state of Illinois plans to dedicate an historical marker to honor this event, and to properly stake Illionis's claim to the honor. Midwest states play hardball when it comes to claiming honors.
The marker will be dedicated on February 25, 2010 at 11:00 P.M. on the Quad. Participants in the earlier raid are especially invited as honored guests. All campus males are invited also. The dedication speaker will be whoever is then currently Governor of Illinois (unless indictments force his attendance elsewhere).
They are expecting a panty raid afterwards. Beer will be served.
